I seem to be able to receive packets from outside my LAN...
what I do not understand is why I cannot establish a connection with a telnet call...

Pretty simple. You are on your LAN, not the Internet. Use your local IP and it will work fine. If you are connected to the Internet from somewhere outside your LAN, use your router's public IP address.

If you try to connect to your routers public IP address from inside, it won't route back. Some routers can be configured to do that, but most can't.

Since your firewall appears to be correctly opened, the problem is either that you're trying from within the LAN, or there is another firewall between the computer running telnet and your router that stops the traffic.

Who is General Sentiment? Is he in charge of the mobile wars? ...You completely misunderstand. General Sentiment is not a who; General Sentiment is a what. What General Motors is to automobiles and General Electric is to electric devices, General Sentiment is to sentiments. However, General Sentiment has taken it on the chin in recent years because Asian manufacturers now produce cheap sentiment imports. GS has fought back by outsourcing sentiments to factories in China, Mexico, and South Africa. However, the unionized American sentiment worker produces world-class sentiments at a competitive price.

The official TRIM support is already in Snow Leopard builds for the new Macbook Pros with SSDs and it's in Lion as well. The official support is only for the Apple's SSDs, no TRIM support for third party SSDs. There is a way to enable it for any SSD that supports TRIM, but it is a hack. Here's the thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1125400

Apple are usually conservative about their SSDs, they don't go for the top of the line SSDs. So, it is normal to see conservative speed from Apple's SSDs.

Why would that be the case? If you want to sell your computer and you installed lion yourself, why would a computer with lion installed by Apple be worth any more assuming both systems have the same hardware?

    Answer below following quote...

I don't think it affects resale, however I prefer that my restore disk be Lion. Let's say you want to do a wipe and reinstall for some reason. That would involve using your restore disk, then installing Lion. I suppose you could install Lion without your restore disk, but Lion won't include iLife on it, so you still need to go back and install those Apps from the original restore disk. Just more of a pain.

This. Preferring the restore disk that came with the computer to be the latest OS version is exactly it. I would logically think that this would increase resale value for that reason alone.

I really hope Oracle can maintain an Apple version of Java, otherwise this will be a very sad day for people who use OSX and Java together.

Oracle has long dumped Oracle for OSX, so I'm not hopeful that Oracle Java 7 will ever see the light of day on Macs.

No Java - No OpenOffice and a load of other apps on OSX.

Also, quite a portion of Java developers use OSX too...

Even the Apple discussions board is powered by Java / JSP!

You missed the real story -- in the release notes Apple explain that they're deprecating the Apple maintained version of Java:

    http://www.infoq.com/news/2010/10/apple-deprecates-java

Apple have provided a mechanism for installing 3rd party JDKs (in particular OpenJDK), but it likely won't work with current versions of Java IDEs (Netbeans, Eclipse etc) until they're updated to work with the new paths.

I wonder if this is anything to do with Oralce?

Either that, or let them keep yours and get them to get you a new one for Christmas. ;)

    That's just plain rude :D

Personally, I think trying to get your hands on a G4 iBook with USB 2.0 might be a better bet.

Yeah, that sounds good, as they'd definitely need the Airport card and USB 2.0.

    Thanks :)

Lineup reaches Blenz (Dunsmuir) from the side entrance to the mall (like the iPhone 4 launch). The store was packed, but they are pushing everyone out at 3:00pm.

    Good luck to everyone!

I've been using Aperture 3.0 since 3.0.1 came out. This is FAR from "beta" quality software. It's rock solid on my 250GB+ Aperture library.

Yes, some folks have had problems, but that's to be expected; this is software, and software will always have bugs. The bugs were neither egregious nor wide-spread (although to hear the kvetching you'd think that every Aperture user had their photo libraries replaced with goat se pics and emailed to their coworkers).

The much less vocal majority have been using Aperture 3 for a while now and are getting a heck of a lot of use out of it.

Another +1.....loving it and zero problems here.:D

So, who's lining up tomorrow? If all goes as planned, I should be at the Eaton Centre's Apple Store at 1PM, hopefully it won't be too late. Anybody there as well? :D

The key question here is why kind of s/w will you need for your physics classes. If you are not doing anything too graphics intense then you can get by with integrated graphics.

If that is the case then I'd go w/ a low end 13" MBP. It's a 1lb lighter than the 15" and also the smaller footprint is going to make it easier on you when using a small classroom desk or workspace area.

I'd removed the hard drive -- put it in a separate ext. enclosure, and put in a 128GB SSD. They are fairly affordable now -- about $200-250. That will make the MBP a tad lighter, but more importantly, SSDs are more durable. Keep essential info on the SSD, and non-essential stuff (docs, etc. you don't usually need/want) on the ext. drive. Bump up the RAM to 8GB. RAM is cheap if you upgrade yourself.

Another option is to wait a month or two until Apple refreshes the MBAs to i3s -- though I think you'll do better with an i5 or i7 MPB. But 4.5 lbs can get to be a burden schelping around all day. Truly tough, personal choice.

Next question - do you have to spend the entire $2500? I'm asking b/c if not I'd put half of it in a 2 year CD (not that CDs are making a bunch of interest these days, but because you won't be tempted to spend it prematurely) and use it for a mid-college career upgrade.

As you advance in your major your hardware demands will probably increase. So your Jr. year would be the ideal time to sell the computer you bought freshman year and upgrade. Use the proceeds from the sale + the CD to buy the new machine. Using a 4 y.o. machine sr. year in a high science major will be miserable.

No. It's not related to any dislike between Apple and Oracle. I believe it was timed purposely to keep Java applications out of the new Mac App Store.
More importantly, is Java going to die on OS X? If OpenJDK or Soylatte don't pick it up then is all lost?
Don't forget the IcedTea project. This is related to OpenJDK, and already has a working Mac implementation.

Algoriddim has reduced the price of its djay app for the iPhone and iPod touch from $4.99 down to $.99 for a limited time. djay (http://appshopper.com/music/djay-for-iphone-ipod-touch) for the iPhone and iPod touch debuted (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/15/algoriddims-djay-arrives-on-iphone-and-ipod-touch/) in the App Store last month and was preceded by a version for the iPad (http://appshopper.com/music/djay) released in December (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/02/djay-application-for-ipad-released/).

djay provides a virtual turntable interface for music mixing and scratching as well as beat-matching, EQ controls and more. The app takes advantage of several features that debuted with iOS 4.2 in November (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/11/22/ios-4-2-1-now-available/) including full access to the iPod library and AirPlay.

Working off the server is just fine, and shouldn't be a performance problem with just four users on the mini. Be sure that any temporary files are being created locally.
